About IAFF Local 892
Local 892 was organized as a Local of the International Association of Firefighters on November 22, 1946. Today the Local represents the 56 line members of the Norwich Fire Department which includes all Firefighters, Officers, and members of the Fire Marshals Office. The members of Local 892 respond to approximately 3,000 calls for service a year. There are 13 Firefighters on duty at all times providing service from 2 Fire Stations. The on-duty members staff 3 Engine Companies and 1 Truck Company along with a Shift Commander. Check out our Apparatus Page to see more about our equipment. The Norwich Fire Department covers the Consolidated City District (CCD) within the City of Norwich. This district is home to about 50% of the city's 40,000 residents living in 3.5 square miles. The NFD also responds outside of its District to provide Mutual Aid to neighboring Fire Districts. In addition to providing Fire Suppression, the members of Local 892 have many other duties. Included in these are providing Fire Prevention and Public Education, First Responder Emergency Medical Services, Rescue Services and Hazardous Materials Response. All members are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians to provide a First Responder service to the citizens of the CCD. Additionally, some members are trained as Hazardous Material Technicians. The Norwich Fire Department operates a Haz-Mat Response Team and is reponsible for a Statewide Foam Trailer, and Mass Decontamination Unit.
